Russia’s Miracle Cure

DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide) was first discovered in 1866 by the Russian scientist Alexander Saytzeff. He reported his findings in a German chemistry journal in 1867. But typically, it would take another hundred years before it would be put to use, but first, only as an industrial solvent. Today, in Russia, around 30,000,000 prescriptions for DMSO are written annually for patients suffering from arthritis, lupus, scleroderma (a serious skin condition) and all kinds of other pain related conditions. Accepted in 120 countries, an estimated 500 million patients have benefited from its use.

Just because DMSO was first used as an industrial solvent doesn’t mean it’s not meant for medicinal purposes. Actually, because it’s a solvent is half the reason it’s such a healing drug. A “solvent” is a carrier solution meaning that it has the capacity to accommodate other atoms and molecules in such a way that they are in “solution”. What it means to be in solution is that the atoms and molecules are separated from each other by the solvent. When atoms and molecules are separated, they are said to be “carried” by the solvent, or “in solution”.

For example, water is an excellent solvent for salt. If you put a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and stir, soon you are unable to see the salt. It has gone into solution. So...industrial chemists are always interested in finding new and more effective solvents. The perfect solvent, in an industrial sense, is that solvent which has the ability to put almost anything into solution in high concentrations and is also safe and cheap. Industrial scientist soon realized the value of DMSO as a commercial solvent because of its amphipathic properties. This means the DMSO molecule has two different affinities, a polar end that is attracted to water and a non polar end that is repelled by it. Because of this, DMSO is actually more “liquid” than water, and can therefore penetrate to places in the body like nothing else can. DMSO will substitute for water, and move extremely rapid through cell membranes. It has been called “water’s alter ego.” It travels so fast that when you put it on the skin of your hand you can usually taste it in your mouth within moments. This ability is why DMSO is unique as a therapeutic remedy. I know for a fact that because DMSO has the ‘power to dissolve’, I am alive today...but I’ll explain that later.

It was first introduced as a pharmaceutical in 1961 when Dr. Stanley Jacob was head of the organ transplant program at Oregon Health Sciences University. He was thinking of using it as an organ preservative when he realized it penetrated the skin without damaging it. He soon found out that people with arthritis and working with DMSO daily were experiencing pain relief. Word spread quickly and it wasn’t long before people were using it as a topical analgesic anywhere from rheumatoid arthritis to sprained ankles. I have trained Standardbred race horses for the past 30 years and know all too well the benefits of DMSO. It has such a pain killing effect that it is illegal to use on horses within 24 hours of a race. Scientists soon realized that DMSO is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and neutralizes free radicals. As a matter of fact it is one of the biggest free radical scavengers known to man. I have used DMSO orally on horses to kill viruses and all kinds of bacterial infections. There are no known pharmaceutical drugs that can kill a virus because no drug can pass through the cell wall. Viruses enter through the membrane of cells and will take up residence in the cell because, unlike bacteria, that is the only way it can replicate itself. But, because DMSO can penetrate cell membranes it will go right into the cell and kill the virus. I would also use DMSO because of its free-radical scavenging effects. I found it could help horses to recover from a workout a lot faster. But my experience with DMSO doesn’t end with horses...I have used it on myself.

It’s an interesting story but first I’ll take you back to the beginning of the story of why I began to drink a teaspoon of DMSO every day...

It was the month of September and I was turning 23 in a few days. I was sitting on the couch one night when I started to lightly pull on my shoulder length hair. The hair was coming out in clumps from all over my head. I would leave a pile of hair in the shower and on my pillow. By the end of the month all that remained were tufts so I started to shave my head so it didn’t look like I was dying of cancer. By Christmas the remaining hair had fallen out all over my body. Not a single hair remained. Of course I started to go see Doctors about my condition. The first Doctor said to rub cow urine on my head...needless to say I went to another doctor. The next doctor reached for a book with a puzzled look on his face and started flipping through pages right in front of me while I explained my condition...next. Finally, I saw a doctor that knew what he was talking about. “Come on Doc, we have to run some tests” I said. Just then he pulled out a binder from his desk and started flipping the pages. “Do you see each page here” he said “Each one of these pages is an alopecia patient. Alopecia has always intrigued me and I have done my own research.” Finally I found someone that could explain it.

“You have alopecia universalis.” He informed. “There are three types...Alopecia areata, where it is just a spot of baldness. Alopecia totalis, when the whole head has hair loss and Alopecia universalis where the whole body is affected. If it falls out before puberty it will never grow back. As long as it was after puberty there is a 100% chance of it growing back”. He reassured. “It’s just the more you lose the longer it takes. You could be 90 before it grows back” He laughed “It’s a stress related autoimmune disease just like ulcers. The body thinks there is a pathogen attacking the follicle. The body sends out soldiers to kill the invaders and the ensuing inflammation suffocates the follicle and the hair breaks off. You can get cortisone injections and all your hair will grow back. But, Brent” he said “The cortisone will kill you, alopecia won’t. Just try to find ways to reduce stress and it should grow back”

I myself, think alopecia is a bacterial type fungus. In the medical community when doctors and scientists don’t really understand what is causing some diseases they say ‘It’s a stress related autoimmune disease’. In a way they are right, although short term stress can actually boost your immune system most chronic stress will suppress your immune system. When the immune system drops...pathogens thrive. They said that about ulcers for years until Robin Warren, an Australian pathologist proved that ‘Helicobacter pylori’ was the bacterium that caused ulcers and the only thing patients had to do was take the right antibiotic.

This is where DMSO comes in. Fast forward to 1998 when I catch wind of Robin Warren’s discovery I decided that it was time to start drinking DMSO. Years before I had read Dr Jacob’s book on DMSO and knew that it was safe for human consumption. To me, there were no better anti-bacteria, anti-viral, anti-fungal than DMSO and also because it was anti-inflammatory it was perfect for the inflammation in the hair follicles. I started with a teaspoon every night before bed. Your breath and body gives off a garlicky smell when you are on DMSO. Lucky for me my wife put up with the ‘rotten eggs wrapped up in a dirty gym sock’ smell because she understood my goals. I did go buy some air fresheners for the house and my fellow workers at work had to suffer a little as well.

One month into the DMSO treatment...my wife was pregnant. This was very strange to say the least. I had lived with my first girlfriend for 5 years and she was off and on the pill during that time. We never had a child but 1 year after we broke up she was pregnant with her new boyfriend. I lived with my next girlfriend for about 5 years as well and the same thing, off and on the pill. After we broke up, a year later she was married and pregnant with her first child. I thought ‘What the hell...am I sterile?’ When I married my wife Cheryl she already had a 6 year old child and we didn’t practice any birth control. Seeing that she was proven fertile and we had been together for a couple years I decided to take a fertility test. I went to the doctor and he gave me the necessary paperwork. I came home and stuck it to my fridge. There it sat...stuck to the fridge. I wasn’t in a rush to go to the lab...I didn’t want to hear the nurse say “Is that all you got?” or have her think I should be in some kind of freak show “Gee, that was awful fast”. Needless to say before I went for the test my wife was pregnant.

I believe what happened was, I possibly had low grade chronic inflammation of the seminal tract and the DMSO cured it. Now, this was a bit scary because of North America’s negative ideas of DMSO does enter your mind. Is my child going to be born with his arm growing out of his stomach? I was a bit worried and decided to stop taking DMSO, but in the mean time I decided to phone Dr Jacob in Oregon myself and see what he had to say. His secretary said “Well, Dr Jacob is retired and in his 90’s. I screen his calls and I will tell him your story. He will call you if he is interested.” The next day Dr Jacob phoned my house. I was at work but Cheryl talked to him. He said “First of all, you have nothing to worry about...actually we freeze embryo’s in DMSO all the time and two, if there was something wrong with the sperm it would have never survived and fertilized the egg. That’s an interesting story though, I’ve never heard that one” Cheryl thanked him and a few months later my healthy son was born.

My next experience with DMSO involved ulcerative colitis.

Since my early thirties I battled ulcerative colitis. I mean ‘battle’ because sometimes I was winning with it going into remission for a year or two and sometimes I was losing, suffering from extreme bloody diarrhea and weight loss. It was a bleeding ulcer in the lower part of the large intestine. The standard medical advice is to stay on Salofalk (an aspirin type drug used to suppress inflamed bowels) oral and suppository. The problem is our standard medical treatment is to just stay on it the rest of your life. At times it would put the bleeding ulcer into remission but what I found was that the Salofalk thinned the skin. How can that be good for your intestinal walls? Especially, when I could never go off the drug. So...in the summer of 2006 my colitis had been out of control for over a year. The Salofalk wasn’t doing its job. I thought well...time for another DMSO session. After all...it was an ulcer and stomach ulcers are cured with antibiotics and since DMSO is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory there should be no better cure for ulcerative colitis than DMSO. Two weeks is all it took. Completely healed and off all medication. I decided to stay on DMSO for a while because of all my “autoimmune diseases”. Funny thing is about a month after healing my colitis I was reading Dr Jacob’s website on DMSO and I was looking at a list of the top ten diseases DMSO works really good on. To my surprise (well, not really) ulcerative colitis was #5 on the list.

And now finally...DMSO and Diabetes...’the power to dissolve’

So...while I was taking DMSO for my health I was totally unaware at the time that I was pre-diabetic. Well, actually I was an undiagnosed diabetic. My doctor said a person usually has type II diabetes for 3-4 years before the symptoms start to show like unquenchable thirst and blurred vision. These symptoms of excessive urinating all night long and drinking water non-stop went on for 4-5 weeks. I explain the doctor’s visit story in the ‘Dad...just how many diseases do you have?’ article. I believe that because I was taking DMSO...I am alive today. Diabetic Ketoacidosis is very dangerous and if it goes untreated a person can go into a coma and die. My doctor couldn’t believe how long the excessive voiding and drinking went on without me going into a coma, but I believe because DMSO is such a huge free-radical scavenger and has the power to dissolve that the excessive ketones that were being produced in my body were just washed out with the urine. The DMSO kept my body squeaky clean.

I believe because the drug companies control Health Canada and the FDA it has made DMSO almost impossible for people to use it. In North America DMSO is pretty well only approved for severe bladder infections and as an organ transplant preserve. If you want to read more about DMSO click here http://www.dmso.org/
